What matters most to you, and why?
Пожалуй, самое знаменитое эссе среди всех бизнес-школ. Стэнфорд задаёт его поступающим уже несколько десятков лет. Неформально считается, что оно является так называемым deal breaker – самой важной частью заявки. Вот что говорится об этом эссе на сайте Stanford GSB:
Essay A: What matters most to you, and why?
For this essay, we would like you to:
- Do some deep self-examination, so you can genuinely illustrate who you are and how you came to be the person you are.
- Share the insights, experiences, and lessons that shaped your perspectives, rather than focusing merely on what you’ve done or accomplished.
- Write from the heart, and illustrate how a person, situation, or event has influenced you.
- Focus on the “why” rather than the “what.”
Your answers for both essay questions combined may not exceed 1,150 words. Suggested word count: Essay A – 750 words, Essay B – 400 words.
Какие выводы я сделал для себя после прочтения этого описания:
- Будь искренним, пиши о действительно важных вещах, не рекламируй себя
- Пройденный путь важнее, чем результат. Поэтому нужны детали, мысли, размышления, не только факты
Также напомню общие правила работы над эссе / резюме, которые я почерпнул для себя в ходе общения с товарищами:
- Начать как можно раньше – хотя бы с чего-то
- Обращаться за помощью к большому количеству компетентных и хорошо знающих меня людей
- Много, много, много переделывать. Не бояться начинать с нуля
Следуя первому правилу, я начал как можно раньше – ещё 16 ноября 2015 г. (при сроке подачи заявки 12/01/2016) Первую версию эссе А написал на телефоне, пока ехал с работы в метро. При написании я руководствовался стикерами из мотивационной истории:
- Любовь к семье и
- Тяга к знаниям, их получению и распространению
Этого достаточно, чтобы начать. Поехали.
Эссе А, «What matters most to you, and why?», первый черновик
Just like in science, my life has two sufficient and complete statistics: Family and Knowledge. In what follows I explain why they matter most to me and how they have shaped me as an individual.
Almost 30 years ago my mom and dad used to be young top-notch engineers in a provincial Soviet town of Saratov creating cutting-edge satellites for the communist military. Today people with similar level of skill and education make hundreds of thousands. But it was early 1990s when my younger brother Sergei and I were born, and our country swiftly disintegrated. Hyperinflation, sky-rocketing crime rates, empty stores (you had to queue long hours to get “tickets” for bread and milk) – and nobody needed engineers anymore. Both my parents had to shift gears: dad became a construction worker, while mom stayed at home with us. Yet they made sure our childhood was happy and readily sacrificed anything for it. For example, once mom sold her long hair to buy me a cool toy car for Christmas. Sergei and I were for a long time the only kids on the block with a PC while dad still had no car and travelled by bike to save money. Mom and dad gave us great preparation in maths and English and managed to get us into the best and most prestigious school in town. They coached us for local maths competitions and arranged for tutors. They paid for all our educational trips while stayed at home themselves saving on their own travel. They helped us prepare applications for the best Russian universities in Moscow and financed our higher education. And most importantly, we had plenty of family time together at the riverside, in the woods, at the sports grounds and at home. Those memories are unforgettable.
So why Family matters to me so much? Because it is this infinite unconditional love that makes me get up in the morning and work harder to become a better person. Now this love runs through my bigger Family – I’m a happy husband and father of a beautiful little girl. And when I hold my daughter, I’m not myself anymore – I’m my father some 25 years ago. And I’m so proud of being him!
I got one more trait from parents: passion for acquiring and sharing knowledge. As a teenager, what a great intellectual pleasure it was to finally discover a solution to a math problem after hours of thought! Yet it was an even bigger pleasure to share the solution with fellow students and observe how you cause other people’s knowledge to grow. The beauty of knowledge (as opposed to just information) is that it makes you understand a particular tiny piece of the universe a bit better and teaches you to act accordingly.
Passion for knowledge took me all the way through high school Olympiads in programming where my team of 3 got semi-finalists in All-Russia championships
What’s next? Learn how to lead a sustainable and happy life and share knowledge with others. E.g. Trace way ahead, business and career incubator…

Получилось ужасно. Глядя на это эссе, понимаешь, что предстоит ещё очень длинный путь. Как Вы заметили, эта версия даже толком не дописана: мысль о знаниях практически не затронута. Количество слов: 509, гораздо меньше рекомендуемых 750. Я не стал дописывать этот вариант, потому что мне не понравилось, что получается.
Как бы то ни было, лёд тронулся, первый шаг сделан. В следующей статье я расскажу, что конкретно мне не понравилось в первом черновике и как я старался превратить его в нечто более интересное – и для меня, и для читателей.
